How useful will an ipod touch be when backpacking to Thailand, New Zealand, Australia and America?
The reason why I am asking is because the web browser with the ipod touch is excellent and ideal for e mail, blogging, facebook, news etc but if I can't get any free wifi access then there isn't much point. So does anyone have any experience of free wifi or even better using an itouch whilst in any of the aforementioned places? Thanks I want to avoid an iphone as I don t need internet everyday and the roaming charges from the UK would be crazy I guess what I am asking is are there lots of free wifif spots in these countries as in the UK you can get free wifi in loads of public places ?
Vacuum sealing rice, vegetables, and mushrooms for backpacking. Is this safe?
I'm going backpacking this week and thought it would save stove fuel if we premade some of our meals and vacuum sealed them. I found vacuum sealed rice meals at Trader Joe's like this, but they were expensive so I decided to make my own. I just jumped into it and made a huge pot of rice, carrots, canned peas, mushrooms, and chicken broth. It wasn't until after everything was cooked and sealed that I found the little warning that vacuum sealing mushrooms is toxic.Does anyone know of safe preserving practices for this kind of thing? And if I seal it loosely and pack it in snow on the trail will it be safer?
Im backpacking through Australia?

Women travelers, any tips on clothing/underclothes for backpacking trip in Winter?
I'll be backpacking around Europe for about four weeks, and welcome any tips on what sorts of underclothes or clothes in general work best in that situation. I'll have limited space and only intermittent access to washing machines. And keep in mind this is a WINTER trip, please.Any help welcome.
What is the best backpacking stove?
I'm planning a week long trip alone next summer. A couple of days will be above the treeline. What would you recommend for a stove? The constraints are Weight and convenience. I'm not concerned about bulk, cost or cooking time. I expect to be able to shelter the stove from most of the wind and would take some sort of wind screen too.
